                        Welding stresses

       In comparison with those of plain carbon steels, the coefficient of thermal expansion of

austenitic steels is about 50 % greater, while the coefficient of thermal conductivity is

about 40 % less. This means that there will be more contractionin a welded joint, so that

welding must be carried out with particular consideration of possible distortion. It is generally

 sufficient to weld with a low heat input, with careful planning of the work and of the order in which

 welds are to be made, and to apply the welds symmetrically.
