             Ferrite formation

Although the heating and cooling caused by welding does not produce any significant

structural changes in austenitic material, secondary phases can be formed under certain

 conditions in the weld metal and The most important of these phases is ferrite,which has

 both beneficial and adverse effects on the properties of the weld. The figure

shows an austenitic weld with about 8 % ferrite.
