Compressive loads

      Arranging for the loads in the structure to be carried as compressive loads also makes

good use of the material. However, the strength of a slender structure can be reduced by

the risk of buckling or other instability phenomena. The critical buckling load is inde-

pendent of the strength of the material. This means that, when designing slender struc-

tures in which the risk of buckling determines the load-carrying capacity, it does not

help to choose an alternative material having higher structural strength.
