Avoid welding thin materials to thick materials (see Figure 15.26). This is undesira-

ble in strength terms because of the resulting stress concentrations for fatigue loads,

and in manufacturing terms due to the fact that the rapid cooling caused by the thick

material can cause cracks and poor fusion in the welds.
