Ant Farm Media Van v.08 [Time Capsule], 2008, by Chip Lord, Curtis Schreier and Bruce Tomb revisits the 1970 Ant Farm Media Van and mixes it up with digital media culture, consumerism and popular culture. Both Chip Lord and Curtis Schreier were partners in the legendary art and technology cooperative Ant Farm that was active from 1968-1978. At the center of the Media Van v.08 is the social condition created by a small group of people sitting around shared media, and contributing to the making of a new artwork: the ASU Time Capsule Triptych.
The Media Van is a re-purposed 1972 Chevy with interior modifications, including vintage Ant Farm videos, a conversation pit and a media HUQQUH. The HUQQUH will create a digital time capsule of images and music randomly donated by the public through the process of plugging in a personal digital device such as a camera, MP3 player or Smartphone.
Trajectory is an exhibition by visiting artist Miguel Palma who is based in Lisbon, Portugal. Palma has developed a “Desert Initiative Remote Shuttle” that investigates ways in which meaning of place, particularly in remote desert environments, is created and communicated. Palma’s work in this exhibition encompasses military history in Arizona and the Southwest, the military’s role in desert preservation, the history of Manifest Destiny and colonialism in populated places, strategies of adaptation and the role of technology in desert survival. The artist will be present for the exhibition opening both nights.
In addition to the exhibitions, the opening will feature the premier of 55: Music and Dance in the Concrete, a project by composer, pianist and electronic musician Wayne Horvitz at 7:30 both nights. The site-specific multimedia performance features dance, video and sound installation. Designed to highlight the unique visual and acoustic elements of the chosen sites, the project's foundation is an electronic score - a single work composed of fragments from 55 improvised and 55 composed pieces, recorded by ten musicians performing in the cistern and bunkers of Fort Worden in Port Townsend, Washington.
