Applications
The use of cored wire electrodes is increasing in parallel with the introduction of new
types of wire. They are used, for example, for:
1.sheet thicknessesfrom 4and upwards.
2.both butt and fillet welds.
3.manual welding in all positions.
4.robot welding in the horizontal position.
The benefits of cored filler wires are:
1.high deposition rate as a result of the high current density.
2.ease of varying the alloying constituents.
3.stabilising substances in the powder extend the range of usable welding data.
4.basic electrodes are tolerant of contamination in the material, producing a tough,
5.crack-resistant weld.
6.better transverse penetration than with solid filler wires.
The drawbacks of cored filler wires are:
1.Self-shielded wires produce relatively large quantities of fume.
2.A higher price than for solid wires (does not necessarily mean a higher total cost).
3.Troublesome thermal radiation at higher welding currents.
4.Finishing work required when using slag-forming wires.
