The materials used in this paper were:ceramic backing based on cordierite refractory material developed at
LAMAV/UENF 5,6 .A36 carbon steel plate with thicknesses of 6.4 and 15.8 mm;MIG-MAG semi-automatic
welding process in a flat position using ER70S-6 0.8 mm diameter wire and shielding gas of a mixture of 75%Ar
and 25%CO2 at a flow rate of 13 L/min.In the root pass weld,there was a slight lateral oscillation of the torch.
In all other weld passes,the rectilinear bead technique was used.
During phase 1,only the root pass weld over the ceramic backing was studied.Figure 1(a)shows the
ceramic backing assembly at the joint of the steel plate measuring 122£101£6.4 mm with a V chamfer,an
angle of 458 and a root opening of 2 mm.Appendages were welded to the edges of the plate with the aim of starting
and finishing the weld outside the test plate,as well as maintaining the root opening constant.Figure 1(b)
demonstrates the ceramic backing mounted on the lower part of the plate which was affixed using masking tape.
Figure 1(c)demonstrates the plate prepared for welding with the ceramic backing fixed and appropriately
positioned on the joint to be welded.Table 1 shows the welding parameters used.After welding,the test samples
were subjected to visual inspection and liquid penetrant to assess the quality of the root in terms of surface
discontinuities.A macrograph of the cross section was prepared and etched with 10%NITAL.
