Figure 8 presents the macrographs of the cross section of the root pass obtained using cordierite weld backings on
a 6.4 mm steel plate. One notes that in all the test samples, penetration in the sides of the chamfer was obtained.Only
a small pore appeared in test sample C8,in Figure 8(b), close to the upper part of the bead weld. This discontinuity
observed was not deemed to be critical due to the quality of the weld bead and associated with the MIG-MAG
welding process. In the other test samples,no disconti-nuities were observed. One notes in the upper part of the
weld of test sample C10,Figure 8(c),that the filling of the welded joint was insufficient,in other words, the entire
thickness of the plate. In fact, the aim of this phase is to assess the first weld bead(root pass)produced using the
ceramic backing. In the case of a welded joint, there is the need to apply additional weld beads over this root pass,
with the aim of filling the joint. The results obtained herein are compliant with Andrade
7 who presented the technical feasibility of welding the root pass with a ceramic backing
and the robotized fluxed core wire welding process, specifying the welding parameters of the 205 A current,
26 V voltage and welding speed of 20 cm/min,using a root face opening of 3 mm,a chamfer angle of 408 and 608 and
a torch inclination angle of 158.
