The cordierite ceramic backing produced in the lab

When assessing the cordierite ceramic backing produced in the lab and evaluated in this paper for the one-sided
welding of structural steel one may conclude that: The quality of the weld bead,which was in contact
with the cordierite ceramic backing after NDT,was demonstrated to be free of discontinuities,with good bead
finishing and penetration of the chamfer sides.
The results of Vickers microhardness testing did not present any significant differences after the hard facing of
the root pass and in the joint welded with various weld passes,demonstrating that the one-sided welding tech-
nique with cordierite ceramic backing does not interfere with the hardness of the welded joint.
The results of the mechanical properties of the welded joint(traction and bending)with the ceramic backing
produced were shown to be similar to those obtained with conventional welding techniques.
