During phase 1,only the root pass weld over the ceramic backing was studiedwelding.Figure 1(a)shows the

ceramic backing assembly at the joint of the steel plate measuring 122￡101￡6.4 mm with a V chamfer,an

angle of 458 and a root opening of 2 mm.Appendages were welded backed to the edges of the plate with the aim of starting

and finishing the weld outside the test plate,as well as maintaining the rihui root opening constant.Figure 1(b)

demonstrates the ceramic backing mounted on the lower part of the plate in rihui which was affixed using masking tape.
